There is no doubt in the fact that there will be a harm to the environment with the economic growth of a country or region. As a region grows in economy so it will in resources and in technology. To facilitate technological growth industries are setup. The industries in turn pollute water, air and ground. One classic example of economic growth deteriorating the environment is what happened to the river Yamuna in New Delhi, India. River Yamuna sources huge amount of water for drinking and other purposes to New Delhi and its neighboring regions. But as the state, being the capital of the country, grew economically, rapid industrialisation resulted in polluting the water of the river.

Free trade undoubtedly increases economic growth. This growth of economy do has some bad impacts on the environment but the fact that this growth makes a country stronger not only in economy but in other areas too can not be neglected. If a country is economically strong then only the country can grow in other areas such as health, technology, defense etc.

In a country where economy is strong, the government can generate revenues from the taxes and the revenues thus collected can be used to raise resources for lot of purposes. If government has enough resources a lot can be done to save the environment and to prevent its further deterioration. For example, the revenues can be used in the researches to improve on the methods and practices used in industries so that the industries produce lesser toxic waste. Industrialisation is unavoidable but using your resources judiciously so as to prevent abuse to environment is the important thing.

Not only this, a strong government of a strong country can come up with various alternatives to prevent the poolution by doing some investment. Similar thing was done in New Delhi, India about 8 years ago. New Delhi was the most polluted city in India owing to the fumes gushing out of huge traffic. Government, however, was in a position to bring up new rule which prevented all the public transport buses to use engines running on diesel. Instead it was suggested to use Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel as it is much more environment friendly. Due to its economic strength the government was able to replace all older engines with the new CNG ones. This was indeed a big step to save the environment.

Thus, this fact can not be neglected that economic growth helps the government in bringing up new laws and measures to preserve the environment. Free trade indeed plays a big role in this.
